The advanced silicon chips on which the future depends are all made in Taiwan – here's why that matters John Naughton

The Guardian

When the history of our time comes to be written, one thing that will amaze historians is how an entire civilisation managed to impale itself on its worship of optimisation and efficiency. This obsession is what underpinned the hubris of globalisation. Apple's famous slogan "Designed by Apple in California, manufactured in China" became its guiding light. So long as products could be made available to consumers everywhere, it no longer mattered where they were made. We first twigged this when the pandemic struck, and we became suddenly aware of how fragile supply chains built to maximise efficiency could be.

Just How Much Does the Future Depend on AI?

#artificialintelligence

Summary: Looking at the 12 hottest world-changing segments in the VC-funded world shows that AI will play a key role. From the inside of the data science profession looking out it's easy to imagine that almost everything that is or will be important somehow depends on AI. Maybe that's true, but how do we tell? First of all we'd have to make a list of all the tech trends that are destined to be game changers over the mid-term, say the next 5 to 15 years. Unfortunately for Google, China has some structural advances that could see them address the gap quickly, especially given the factors likely to make a material difference in the outcome of the game.

Are we about to witness the most unequal societies in history?

#artificialintelligence

Inequality goes back to the Stone Age. Thirty thousand years ago, bands of hunter-gatherers in Russia buried some members in sumptuous graves replete with thousands of ivory beads, bracelets, jewels and art objects, while other members had to settle for a bare hole in the ground. Nevertheless, ancient hunter-gatherer groups were still more egalitarian than any subsequent human society, because they had very little property. Property is a pre-requisite for long-term inequality. Following the agricultural revolution, property multiplied and with it inequality.
